“The cause of carbapenem resistance is the formation of a carbapenemase in> 95% of A. baumannii. These bacterial enzymes come in many varieties and hydrolyze carbapenems as well as most other ß-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins and aztreonam. The majority of A. baumannii forms different OXA carbapenemases (OXA-58 type, OXA-24 type, OXA-23 type), which occur chromosomally coded or plasmid-coded within the species or can be exchanged between different Acinetobacter species. The chromosomally coded carbapenemases of the OXA-51 type occurring in all A. baumannii can also contribute to carbapenem resistance, ....“1
