Neonatal GBS (group B streptococci, Streptococcus agalactiae) infections occur mainly when the bacteria rise from the mother's vagina into the amniotic fluid after the onset of childbirth. Both premature and mature newborns can be affected. Sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis can result. The highest incidence is in young infants. The 2010 ESPED annual report shows that GBS caused 106 infections per year; about 62% of the cases in babies born on term.
